So I havent gotten a reply from you Mr. Freirich. Is it because I'm too young? I could comprehend your book very well. I am 15 years old, which is around the age of several of your characters. I would love to write books like you do. Is there not ANY advice I could get? Just the tiniest bit of advice will help. Thats all I'm asking for. Thanks

I do have some thoughts for you.  Perhaps most importantly, write, always, and freely, even poorly (since you can edit and improve later).
Remember that a character's observations of their immediate environment describe themselves and their emotional state as much as the world around them -- a valuable way to show rather than tell. Read poetry and study the myriad ways it achieves meaning.

I wish you luck, and thank you for reading.

    Dear Roy,
I'm in Bangkok, Thailand. Winged Creatures is in theatre now and I've just watched it yesterday. Initially, I've been trying to find any info about the movie I've watched yesterday and this site came up. Now I'm asking myself "what have I been doing?" because I have never known your book exists!
Anyway, the movie made me think about a lot of things in my life. Though there's something that is pretty unclear about it but the one thing I am certain of is that everyone's wounded somehow and it is not something to be afraid or ashamed of. And everyone wants redemption.
Winged Creatures has encouraged me to move further along while leaving some room for reminiscence. And that's a good sign for me.
I am here to tell you that you have my support.
    Cheers!

First off, congratulations on writing such an amazing novel. It's not everyday I read something that inspires a person who's still in their Jr. High years. Do you happen to know whether the film will have a limited release? Being a fan on ensemble drama and interwoven storylines, I can't wait until the film!

      Hello Danielle,

Thanks for your questions.  I'm very glad to think I've encouraged you!  Sometimes it seems as if the more challenging a field, the more rewarding it can be, and writing is a perfect example.  Problems in the work can plague you for days and nights, but it's a true joy to discover and eventually trust that some part of you will provide an answer.

Regarding WINGED CREATURES, the book will always be more  dimensional, nuanced, and complete in its depiction of these stories.  For instance,  Carla: the movie does not show the fly that haunts her, or her half-conscious neglect of her baby, or her violent encounter with a man in a bar, or the mother and toddler she sees when she is almost hit by a car -- a sort of mirror that makes her suddenly realize what she has been doing.

Dr. Laraby:  in the book, his patient Sam goes into a coma, then later has a heart attack.  These are two distinct difficult moments that make Laraby feel like a failure, and help us understand  the pressure on him to feel like a successful healer somewhere in his life.  In the movie, this is one event.

Also missing from the movie:  psychologist Ron Abler tries to reach Anne, but fails, and Anne attends the party Howard invites her to, but fails to make any connection there.  Jimmy, too, doesn't have a missed opportunity to stop the gunman, as he does in the book.

In the film, as well, Kathy Archenault is now Charlie's daughter instead of wife, to accommodate the age difference between Forest Whitaker and Jennifer Hudson.  In the finished film, Charlie also has cancer and a compulsive gambling past, way too much "backstory," or history,  in retrospect.  I wrote drafts of the screenplay with and without those backstories and saw edits of the film that had neither, which I thought worked better.  Missing from the movie: Kathy is concerned and resourceful enough to track him down.

There are other differences, of course, but probably too numerous to mention, and probably inevitable, given time and budget constraints in the making of the film.

Thanks again for writing, and please let me know how your effforts progress!

      Best to you,

      Roy

Thanks for your question.  I don't think it's suitable for young teens, but perhaps for mature teens sixteen on.  The book and movie both depict shocking violence, spousal abuse, suicidal behavior, religious hysteria, sexual promiscuity, and though the characters arguably right themselves in the end, the way there can be disturbing.

I do believe there's a message here for teens, if they are mature enough to glean it: when you see the next action movie with a huge body count, think about what the lives of the others -- the witnesses and families of victims -- might be like in the hours and days that follow.

In the end, I recommend parents take a look first, and judge for themselves.

Winged Creatures has taken me to the other side of the world, the opposite side of the fairy tale one. It shows people how real this world we are living; how real it is to let us witness the most difficult event in our lives - death. This novel opens the eyes of the readers to experience loss, and hope. It is like J.D. Salinger's novel, "The Catcher in the Rye", although they are different in ways. A masterpiece like this is needed to be cherished and treasured forever.

I've always believed there's drama enough in the real world, if only we look hard enough, and imagine vividly enough: what must it be like to be him, or her, that cashier in that restaurant, or that doctor, or driving instructor?

Readers like you, who are willing to share their thoughts, help the book find others. Thank you again.

    Hey Roy,
I have some questions about your book, before you said that they took out Carla's fly in the movie, which i just figured out, is one reason on how the book relates to the name. So does that mean every character has a winged creature, kind of related to them? I know Anne has the birds out in her backyard but what about everybody else? Does Jimmy have a related winged creature? And Jimmy's last scene, the attempted suicide, is the movie exactly like it is in the book, on that part? one last question, how did you come up with the idea of this awesome book, with the name winged creatures and realting that to a shooting at a diner? it's real genius work I think. So hope you can answer some of these questions.and have a good day

      Hello Annette,

I recommend composing a brief paragraph review of WINGED CREATURES and posting it on Amazon or Goodreads, to jumpstart the flow!

Seriously, I would begin by examining your assumptions: sitting down to think of the right idea for a story is way too much pressure.  Instead, free yourself to write badly, with no expectation, or attachment to outcome. Some examples: describe the room you're in -- from a shallow bachelor's point of view, an angry teenager's, a snobbish woman's.  Think of how a newly bereaved person might behave, in a small but telling way you have never seen.  Think of things that compel your imagination, and worry about quality or proper basis for stories later.  Eventually, you'll have words and sentences, paragraphs and ideas that may suggest others.  Trust that some will be unworthy, but that some may intrigue.

Please let me know if it works!  Thanks so much for your kind response to my book.

What inspired you to write a novel like this? This really is a brilliant book. Have you've written any others like this? If not you should definitely do because I really enjoyed reading this one. Anne and Jimmy are my favourite characters especially Jimmy=) Is the movie really similar to the book or are the intense scenes different? like the intense scene with Jimmy? or just the layout of the storyline? I know you probably weren't on the set a lot, but if you could answer as much as you can I would surely enjoy it. So excellent work on this book, I wish I could get an autograph but I live in Canada.

      Hi Krista,

The movie is very similar to the book, since I wrote the screenplay, too.  The main differences (aside from ages of characters for casting reasons) were due to time and budget constraints.

In the movie, I miss some of the moments in the book and screenplay -- the idea that Jimmy felt he could have done more and was guilty about it, that the psychologist and Anne's mom are trying to help her more, and I really miss the fly that haunts Carla -- her winged creature.  There are also moments missing of Anne trying to be a normal girl again by going to a party, of Carla beating up a drunk guy who makes a pass at her, of Jimmy's dad becoming physically abusive with Jimmy's mom.

      Thanks for your questions.

Yes, I just found out the movie will be out sometime last quarter this year.

And yes, I have met the actors -- I was lucky to be on set for lots of the filming.  Josh Hutcherson throws a pretty good football between scenes.  The movie would not have worked without his heartbreaking, brave performance.

I keep typing about the movie, I know, but the book was definitely great and I hope the movie will live up to it.

Josh Hutcherson gives one of the most nuanced and heartbreaking performances in the film.  In the end, he was bravest of all the characters and forced Anne to face the truth.

I was permitted on set for awhile, but was careful -- per the director's specific request -- never to discuss book or script with actors, so the film is really the director's own interpretation of the material.  I guess that's why responses to the book are so important to me -- that's where I was able to tell the stories directly to readers, with no one in between.

Thanks so much for writing, comments like yours (especially on Goodreads or Amazon) can encourage the publisher to promote the novel, and the studio to release the film.

    Mr. Freirich,
"Winged Creatures" was one of those books I could never put down. Constantly I wanted to know what happens next! The book was better than Stephen King's "DUMA KEY" because I could relate to it. A bank near my house was robbed a few years ago by two 20 year olds. My aunt was in the bank at the time and was held hostage. How did you ever form the idea of a "restaurant" shooting? On MOVIEFONE.com, I noticed the film release of this novel is in 2010, is that true? A truly amazing book, Mr. Freirich! I recommended it to all of my co-workers and friends at work.

      Thank you very much!

The idea came from an actual event in a San Ysidro McDonald's Restaurant, in 1984.  James Oliver Huberty killed 21 people in an afternoon before killing himself, and over the years I became haunted by what the lives of the survivors might be like in the weeks following -- their emotional balance with their spouses and children, their ability to work, their trust in the ordinary physical world.

I hope your aunt was able to deal with what certainly sounds like an overwhelming event in her life.

As far as the release date for the film -- I'm not seeing that date on moviefone and suspect it was an error.  That said, I'm with everyone else in awaiting word of the actual release date.

In any event, comments like yours mean everything to me; the novel truly represents my vision of these stories.  Reader responses (and reviews on Amazon or Goodreads) helps widen the audience, and I know they encourage publishers to believe in me as a writer,  and the studio to believe in this film.

I'm in the LA area, and would be glad to drop by your local bookstore to sign some copies.  Meanwhile, of course, I'm glad to answer any questions and consider any comments about the book or film.

      Thanks again!

      Best,

      Roy

Hey, Mr. Freirich! I picked up this book at the bookstore a few days ago. I read it in one night! I loved "WINGED CREATURES" and you are an amazing writer. Your writing style of this book is very appropriate in a situation of a shooting. I cannot wait until the movie comes out in theaters! I am sure it will win many Oscars because the imaginative plot, the fantastic cast, and the director. You need to write more books...and publish them soon. All of my friends bought a copy of the book also and they adore it.

I sincerely thank you for your comments. While I'm thrilled to have the novel made into a film, it's the connection to readers I value most, since the book will always be the truest reflection of my intentions.

Please pass my thanks to your friends as well. I depend on the support of readers, and these responses (especially good reviews on Amazon or Goodreads!) help the next publisher believe in me as an author, and encourage the film studio to find an audience for this film.

I'm located in the LA area; if your bookstore is nearby, I'd be happy to sign some books, and perhaps read some pages aloud..  Meanwhile, of course, I am always glad to answer any questions about the book or film via this website.

      Thanks again!  Best to you,

Thank you so much; it's gratifying to hear.  Unfortunately, at this point, the release date is still to be determined.  I will forward your comment on to the producer and director and studio, in hopes it will encourage them.

In this era of movies spawned from comic-book heros and television shows, studios sometimes need to be convinced that there's an audience for original stories.  It's lamentable, but understandable: movies cost a fortune to make and market.

I hope you'll recommend the book to others.

      Best to you,

      Roy

I check every day, too.  The movie would not have not worked without Josh.  He has one of the most difficult roles of all.

      Dave,

      Thanks for your question.

I haven't heard a movie release date yet, but expect to shortly.  The novel was released on January 10, and it's available on Amazon and other book sites and at bookstores.  I have an author's blog on Amazon, where you can read more about the story.

      Best to you,

I'm currently about halfway through "WINGED CREATURES", and I could not be more engrossed in it! The characters are really what make it for me--I love how each person's pain is woven so beautifully into how they deal with the trauma. I'm curious, though, have you seen the completed film yet? How does it hold up? Also is there a release date in sight? I heard that there was most likely going to be a late November/early December opening.

Either way, fantastic novel, I can't wait to finish it!

Thank you so much.  I have seen the film, and as it states in the credits, it's a "Rowan Woods Film," (called a "possessory credit") and while it does not indicate authorship it signifies the film is very much the director's unique vision and interpretation of the screenplay.

As the screenwriter, I can vouch for how closely the screenplay follows the novel, but after that, it's simply out of my hands, and I will say that for me many key story elements were left behind, or undersold.

Of course, to put it in perspective,  Julius Epstein thought they screwed up his movie, too, which we all know as Casablanca.

It's been an interminable wait for a release date, as the studio decides how to market the film.

Most of all though, it's the connection with readers I value, without anyone's intermediary vision.  Comments like yours encourage me to keep at it, and reviews from readers on websites like Goodreads and Amazon can encourage a book publisher to try and widen the audience, or even to take a chance on me again.

I'm in the Los Angeles area, and if you are as well, I'd be happy to drop by your local bookstore to sign some copies.

        Thanks, and best to you.
